About Matthew.  Jewish Disciple of Jesus. Former tax collector  

Matthew’s purpose for writing.  To emphasise Jesus’s role as the Messiah, the Son of David and the Son of Abraham (Matthew 1.1), who fulfils the prophecies and promises of the Old Testament. 

Luke 

Author.  Luke 

About Luke.  Well-educated physician. Likely not Jewish. Traveled alongside the apostles during the early spread of Christianity 

Luke’s purpose for writing.  To provide an ordered and detailed account of the events in Jesus’s life (Luke 1.3) and to emphasise that God’s mission includes non-Jews (Gentiles) as well as the nation of Israel.
