Are you mouldable?

 Are You Mouldable?

Does a clay pot argue with its maker? Does the clay dispute with the one who shapes it, saying, “Stop, you’re doing it wrong!” Does the pot exclaim, “How clumsy can you be?”

ISAIAH 45.9

O Israel, can I not do to you as this potter has done to his clay? As the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand.

JEREMIAH 18.6

Don’t let the world around you squeeze you into its own mould, but let God re-mould your minds from within, so that you may prove in practice that the plan of God for you is good, meets all his demands and moves towards the goal of true maturity.

ROMANS 12.2, PHILLIPS

Have you ever made something out of clay or Play-Doh? Or have you ever seen a potter create something on a pottery wheel? The potter spins the lump of clay on the wheel, pressing and forming it here and there, transforming the shapeless clay into a work of art or a useful jar or bowl.

In the Bible, God describes himself as a potter who is shaping our lives into something he can pour his own glory into. We are in the hands of God right now, being shaped and formed, just as a potter shapes clay. And we have a choice about how we’ll respond. We can resist his shaping through our rebellion or resentment, which makes us hard and unbending. Or we can be soft and mouldable, open to whatever God wants to do in and through our lives.

God is making you and shaping you for his own unique purposes. And he’s not done. You are still a work in progress, and God wants to keep refining his work of art. He wants to smooth out certain parts of you and grow you in other ways. He wants to redesign your inner life, reorganise your priorities, redirect the tendencies of your tongue, and rewire your thinking patterns. He’s out to make something beautiful, and the softer you are toward him, the more beautiful your life will become.
