Something out of nothing

 Something out of Nothing

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

GENESIS 1.1

By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.

HEBREWS 11.3, NIV

By him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.

COLOSSIANS 1.16, NIV

Nobody can make something out of nothing. Nobody, that is, except God. That’s what the Bible teaches us about God’s creation of the universe.  God made something — everything — out of nothing.

This means that before God began to create the universe, nothing else existed except God himself. All that we see — the mountains, the oceans, the stars, the earth itself — came into existence when God created it, when he spoke it into being. And if God ever stopped speaking, “Be!” into your body and soul, you would cease to be. As Jesus said, “People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God” (Mt 4.4).

This means that everything God created and sustains has meaning and purpose. Everything that exists has a purpose, a goal, a reason for being. And the ultimate purpose of God in everything he created was and is to display his glory in all its fullness.

What does this mean for us now? It means that God can create faith where there is none in our minds or hearts. It means that God can generate love and forgiveness where there is none between two people in a hurting relationship. It means that God can speak into the emptiness in our lives and give purpose and meaning to them.
