Put off the old, put on the new

When you were pagans you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. 1 You turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven. 2

You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. 3 Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes. 4

For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do – living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry. They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you. But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. 5 Now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander and filthy language from your lips 6 Rid yourselves of all deceit, hypocrisy, envy. 7

Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh. 8 As God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. 9

The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armour of light. 10

Your heavenly Father

You are sons of the LORD your God. 1 The Father Himself loves you. 2

Be imitators of God, as dearly loved children. 3 Be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful. 4 Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect. 5

As obedient children, do not be conformed to the desires of your former ignorance. But as the One who called you is holy, you also are to be holy in all your conduct. 6

Do not despise the LORD’s instruction and do not loathe His discipline; for the LORD disciplines the one He loves, just as a father, the son he delights in. 7

As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him. 8 Your heavenly Father will forgive you. 9

God is a father of the fatherless. 10 All those led by God’s Spirit are God’s sons. You received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father!” 11

Your Father knows the things you need before you ask Him. 12 What man among you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him! 13

Our Saviour

We believe that we will be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, 1 who descended from heaven, 2 who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin, 3 who was handed over to death for our trespasses, 4 who freed us from our sins by his blood, 5 who was raised for our justification, 6 who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light, 7 who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us, 8 who rescues us from the wrath that is coming, 9 who loves us, 10 who died for us, so that we may live with him. 11

Angels

Praise the LORD, you angels, you mighty ones who carry out his plans, listening for each of his commands. Yes, praise the LORD, you armies of angels who serve him and do his will! 1

He sends his angels like the winds, his servants like flames of fire. 2

The angel of the LORD is a guard; he surrounds and defends all who fear him. 3 He will order his angels to protect you wherever you go. They will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone. 4

Don’t forget to show hospitality to strangers, for some who have done this have entertained angels without realising it! 5 

Jesus was given a position “a little lower than the angels”; and because he suffered death for us, he is now “crowned with glory and honour.” 6 Now Christ has gone to heaven. He is seated in the place of honour next to God, and all the angels and authorities and powers accept his authority. 7

Don’t let anyone condemn you by insisting on the worship of angels, saying they have had visions about these things. 8 Angels are only servants – spirits sent to care for people who will inherit salvation. 9

Make the LORD of Heaven’s Armies holy in your life. He is the one you should fear. 10

The LORD Almighty is with us

God is with us. 1

He is our help and our shield. 2 God is our refuge and strength, an ever present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. 3

Great is our Lord and mighty in power. 4 If God is for us, who can be against us? 5 

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged. With us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles. 6 It is he who will save us. 7

With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies. 8 Our help is in the name of the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. 9

The LORD loves the just and will not forsake his faithful ones. 10 He will be our guide even to the end. 11

The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. 12

I give eternal life

Jesus says 

 

I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. 1

Those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life. 2

I tell you the truth, those who listen to my message and believe in God who sent me have eternal life. They will never be condemned for their sins, but they have already passed from death into life. 3 

I tell you the truth, anyone who obeys my teaching will never die! 4 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from me. 5

As Moses lifted up the bronze snake on a pole in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him will have eternal life. For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 6

For it is my Father’s will that all who see his Son and believe in him should have eternal life. I will raise them up at the last day. 7 Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Do you believe this? 8

You gave me life

You formed me with your hands; you made me. You clothed me with skin and flesh, and you knit my bones and sinews together. 1

You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvellous – how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. 2

You gave me life and showed me your unfailing love. My life was preserved by your care. 3 O Lord, you alone are my hope. I’ve trusted you, O LORD, from childhood. 4

LORD, remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numbered – how fleeting my life is. You have made my life no longer than the width of my hand. My entire lifetime is just a moment to you. 5

O God, you are my God. I will praise you as long as I live. 6 O LORD, I give my life to you. 7

Lead me on this journey

I am a sojourner on the earth, 1 a sojourner in a foreign land. 2

There is no faithfulness or steadfast love, and no knowledge of God in the land; there is swearing, lying, murder, stealing and committing adultery; they break all bounds, and bloodshed follows bloodshed. 3 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. 4

Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear to my cry; hold not your peace at my tears! For I am a sojourner with you, a guest, like all my fathers. 5 They all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. They desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. 6

You have led in your steadfast love the people whom you have redeemed; you have guided them by your strength to your holy abode. 7 Send out your light and your truth; let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy hill and to your dwelling! 8

Enjoy God’s good gifts

God richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment. 1

The LORD will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right. 2 God gives wisdom, knowledge, and joy to those who please him. 3 

From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another. 4 Whatever is good and perfect comes down to us from God our Father. 5

God has made everything beautiful for its own time. People should eat and drink and enjoy the fruit of their labour, for these are gifts from God. 6 These pleasures are from the hand of God. For who can eat or enjoy anything apart from him? 7 Go ahead. Eat your food with joy, and drink your wine with a happy heart, for God approves of this! 8

To enjoy your work and accept your lot in life – this is indeed a gift from God. 9 Rejoice in all you have accomplished because the LORD your God has blessed you. 10

Celebrate because of all the good things the LORD your God has given to you and your household. 11 Are you happy? You should sing praises. 12 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good! 13

Put your hope in the LORD

Put your hope in the LORD. For there is faithful love with the LORD, and with Him is redemption in abundance. 1 You who believe in the name of the Son of God may know that have eternal life. 2

The promise is for you and for your children, and for all who we far off, as many as the Lord our God will call. 3 Rejoice in hope, be patient in affliction. 4

Light shines in the darkness for the upright. 5 The darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining, 6 the light of life. 7 

Jesus is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead. 8 He who raised Christ from the dead will also bring your mortal bodies to life through His Spirit who lives in you. 9

The world with its lust is passing away, but the one who does God’s will remains forever. 10 Always fear the LORD. For then you will have a future, and your hope will never fade. 11 Put your hope in the LORD, both now and forever. 12

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. 13

The LORD is our king

The LORD is our king. 1 The LORD has established his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all. 2

The LORD reigns; he is robed in majesty. 3 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne. 4 Come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD. 5

He is the King of glory, 6 Lord of heaven and earth, 7 the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honour and eternal dominion. 8

All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the LORD, and all the families of the nations shall worship him. For kingship belongs to the LORD, and he rules over the nations. Before him shall bow all who go down to the dust. 9

The LORD will reign forever and ever. 10 His kingdom shall never be destroyed. 11

With trumpets and the sound of the horn make a joyful noise before the King, the LORD! 12 To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honour and glory forever and ever. Amen. 13

I will come again

Jesus says

 

You must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour. 1 

When you see the desolating sacrilege standing in the holy place at that time there will be great suffering, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. 2 From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates. 3

Immediately after the suffering of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of heaven will be shaken. Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. 4

 Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day does not catch you unexpectedly, like a trap. 

Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man. 5

Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. 6

I am coming soon, hold fast to what you have, so that no one may seize your crown. 7

Light has come

When the set time had fully come, God sent his Son. 1 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 2

Christ Jesus came into the world 3 to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death. 4 

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. 5 The LORD is God, and he has made his light shine on us. 6

The Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. 7 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ. 8

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. 9

The grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. 10 

Light has come into the world. 11 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 12

God will answer our prayers

We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if anyone is a worshipper of God and does his will, God listens to him. 1 The LORD is far from the wicked, but he hears the prayer of the righteous. 2

This is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 3 

We do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 4

And whatever we ask we receive from God, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him. 5 

The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desire of those who fear him. 6 

He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 7 He is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us. 8

Let us with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. 9 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith. 10

Be zealous

Be zealous. 1 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 2

Jesus Christ gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works. 3 Do not grow weary in doing good. 4 Do not be slothful in zeal. 5

You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. 6

Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world. 7 

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. 8 Be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. 9

The Child to be born

 Rejoice greatly, your king comes to you! 1

Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come, one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times. 2

The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel (which means “God with us”). 3 The holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. 4 You are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from the sins. 5

In his name the nations will put their hope. 6 The rising sun will come to us from heaven to shine on those living in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the path of peace. 7

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 8 

The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end. 9 The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this. 10

Be subject to the government

Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 1 Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. 2 

Whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. Do what is right and you will commended. For the one in authority is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God's servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoers. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of punishment but also as a matter of conscience. This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God's servants, who give their full time to governing. Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honour, then honour. 3 

 Give back to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's. 4 Show proper respect to everyone, fear God, honour the emperor. 5

 I urge that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people – for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. No one can hinder My plans for you

God and Jesus says 

 

Listen to me, O house of Jacob, all the remnant of the house of Israel, who have been borne by me from your birth, carried from the womb; even to your old age I am he, even when you turn gray I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear; I will carry and will save. 1 I will save you, and you shall be a blessing. 2

For surely I know the plans I have for you, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. 3 My purpose shall stand, and I will fulfill my intention. 4

I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. 5 I will be a wall of fire all around it. 6

Jesus is

Jesus is the Son of God, 1 the Beloved, 2 the radiance of the glory of God, the exact imprint of his nature. 3

He is the propitiation for our sins, 4 the Righteous One, 5 the Lamb of God, 6 the Saviour of the world. 7

He is the mediator of a new covenant, 8 the founder and perfecter of our faith, 9 the head of the church, 10 the great shepherd of the sheep. 11

He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, 12 the heir of all things, 13 the King. 14

He is the true God and eternal life, 15 the living one, 16 the Amen. 17

A statement of faith

Here am I, the servant of the Lord. 1

I worship the LORD, the God of heaven. 2

The spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life. 3

I am poor and needy, but the Lord takes thought for me. 4 The Lord God helps me. 5 The Mighty One has done great things for me. 6

This poor soul cried, and was heard by the LORD, and was saved from every trouble. 7 I have made the Lord God my refuge. 8

My eyes are ever toward the LORD. 9 I will call on him as long as I live. 10 I keep the LORD always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. 11

The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup. 12 On God rests my deliverance and my honour. 13

Is anything too hard for the LORD? 1 

Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary. 2

Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure. The LORD lifts up the humble; he casts the wicked to the ground. 3

The LORD kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up. 4 And God raised the Lord and will also raise us up by his power. 5

With God all things are possible. 6

Ah, Lord God! It is you who has made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! 7 You are the God who works wonders; you have made known your might among the peoples. 8

Obey the LORD’s commandments

What does the LORD your God require of you, but to fear the LORD your God, so walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments and statutes of the LORD? 1

Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams. 2

And his commandments are not burdensome. 3 This commandment is not too hard for you, neither is it far off. But the word is very near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can do it. 4

This is love, that we walk according to his commandments. 5 

You shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. You shall walk in all the way that the LORD your God has commanded you, that you may live, and that it may go well with you, and that you may live long in the land that you shall possess. 6 Whoever does the will of God abides forever. 7 

Whoever keeps his commandments abides in God, and God in him. 8

Fear the LORD and serve him faithfully with all your heart. For consider what great things he has done for you. 9

The steadfast love of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him, and his righteousness to children’s children, to those who keep his covenant and remember to do his commandments. 10

Ask

You do not have because you do not ask. 1

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. 2

Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him! 3

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 4

Everything is possible for one who believes. 5 God is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us. 6

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 7 Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete. 8

Words of comfort

Jesus says Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. 1

 The Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free. 2

 Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. 3

 Do not worry, saying, “What will we eat?” or “What will we drink?” or “What will we wear!” 4 You are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. 5 Strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten in God’s sight. But even the hairs of your head are all counted. Do not be afraid you are of more value than many sparrows. 7

God is able to deliver us

The Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials. 1 

The LORD drove the Red Sea by a strong east wind all night and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. And the people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground, the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left. 2 The waters returned and covered the chariots and the horsemen; of all the best of Pharaoh that had followed them into the sea, not one of them remained. Thus the LORD saved Israel that day from the hand of the Egyptians. 3

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were thrown into the burning fiery furnace. 4 God sent his angel and delivered his servants, who trusted in him. 5 The fire had no power over the bodies of those men. The hair of their heads were not singed, their cloaks were not harmed, and no smell of fire had come upon them. 6

Daniel was brought and cast into the den of lions. God sent his angel and shut the lions’ mouths. Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no kind of harm was found on him, because he had trusted in his God. 7

Behold, these are but the outskirts of his ways, and how small a whisper do we hear of him! But the thunder of his power who can understand? 8

He who has saved Daniel from the power of the lions 9 is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think. 10

Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us. 11

Only one God

The LORD our God, the LORD is one. 1 The LORD is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath there is no other. 2

Although there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth – as indeed there are many “gods” yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, 3 the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, 4 the God of David, 5 the God of Elijah, 6 the God of Daniel, 7 the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, 8 the God of Jews, the God of Gentiles, 9 the God of justice, 10 the God of truth, 11 the God of love and peace, 12 the God of hope, 13 the God of endurance and encouragement, 14 the God of all grace, 15 the God of heaven and earth, 16 the only God, our Saviour. 17

He cares for you

The Lord knows those who are his. 1 Anyone who loves God is known by him. 2

God knows your hearts. 3 Even the hairs of your head are all counted. 4

Your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 5

The LORD watches over the way of the righteous. 6 The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, and his ears are open to their cry. 7 For the eyes of the LORD range throughout the entire earth, to strengthen those whose heart is true to him. 8

The LORD lifts up those who are bowed down; the LORD loves the righteous. 9 As the heavens are high above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him. 10

Looking to the eternal

God has put eternity into man’s heart. 1 We look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal. We have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling. 2

We do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison. 3

And this is the promise that he made to us – eternal life, 4 eternal redemption, 5 eternal salvation, 6 eternal glory, 7 eternal comfort, 8 eternal dwellings, 9 eternal inheritance, 10 eternal joy, 11 eternal light, 12 eternal love. 13

Christian love

All of you share in God’s grace with me. I have you in my heart. 1

Night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. 2 I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel. 3

Your love has given me great joy and encouragement. 4

God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus. 5 l long to see you so that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith. 6 Though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see how disciplined you are and how firm your faith in Christ is. 7

My brothers and sisters, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord dear friends. 8

I urge you to join me in my struggle by praying to God for me. 9

Do not fear

God says 

 

Thus says the LORD, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel. Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. 1

Forever

Though the wicked sprout like grass and all evildoers flourish, they are doomed to destruction forever. 1 But whoever does the will of God abides forever. 2 

His saints are preserved forever. 3 As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds his people, from this time forth and forevermore. 4 

He will swallow up death forever. 5

 The saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom and possess the kingdom forever, forever and ever. 6 And the LORD will reign over them in Mount Zion from this time forth and forevermore. 7

 Then justice will dwell in the wilderness, and righteousness abide in the fruitful field. And the effect of righteousness will be peace, and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust forever. 8 Steadfast love will be built up forever. 9

 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom. 10 Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above; and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever. 11

Unity in Christ

All of you who were baptised into Christ have yourselves with Christ. You are all one in Christ Jesus. 1

You are a chosen race. You once were not a people, but now you are the people of God. 2

There is no distinction between Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and freeman. 3 There is neither male nor female. 4 But Christ is all, and in all. 5

Preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all. 6

Hold fast

Take hold of the eternal life, to which you were called. 1 Take hold of the life that really is life. 2

Take good care to love the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to keep his commandments, and to hold fast to him. 3

Hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good. 4 Hold fast to love and justice. 5 Do not let loyalty and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. 6

Let us hold fast to what we have attained. 7 Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. 8 For we have become partners of Christ, if only we hold our first confidence firm to the end. 9

Do not abandon that confidence of yours; it brings a great reward. 10 Hold fast to the LORD your God, as you have done to this day. 11

I walk in Your faithfulness

O LORD your steadfast love is before my eyes, and I walk in your faithfulness. 1

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. 2 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life. 3

My hope

 I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that Day what has been entrusted to me. 1 

My hope is from him. 2 

Surely my right is with the LORD, and my recompense with my God. 3 God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol, for he will receive me. 4 The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. 5 

He will bring me out to the light; I shall look upon his vindication. 6 God will let me look in triumph on my enemies. My God in his steadfast love will meet me. 7

The LORD has done great things for us

The LORD is God, and he has made his light shine on us. 1 For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ. 2

He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves. 3 

He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. 4

He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. 5 God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 6

God has blessed us in the heavenly realm with every spiritual blessing in Christ. 7 He has given us his very great and precious promises. 8 He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come. 9

The LORD sees

Woe to those who go to great depths to hide their plans from the LORD, who do their work in darkness and think, “Who sees us? Who will know?” You turn things upside down, as if the potter were thought to be like the clay? Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, “You did not make me”?

Can the pot say to the potter, “You know nothing”? 1

Does he who fashioned the ear not hear? Does he who formed the eye not see? Does he who disciplines nation not punish? Does he who teaches mankind lack knowledge? The LORD knows all human plans. 2

Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. 3 His eyes are on the ways of mortals; he sees their every step. There is no deep shadow, no utter darkness, where evildoers can hide. 4

The LORD searches every heart and understands every desire and every thought. 5 He knows the secrets of the heart. 6 The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart. 7 For the eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. 8

Before the world was made

God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time – to show us his grace through Christ Jesus. 1 Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. 2

For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. 3 God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure. 4

God chose him as your ransom long before the world began, but he has now revealed him to you in these last days. 5

This message about Jesus Christ has revealed his plan for you Gentiles, a plan kept from the beginning of time. But now as the prophets foretold and as the eternal God has commanded, this message is made known to all Gentiles everywhere , so that they too might believe and obey him. 6 We speak of the mystery of God – his plan that was previously hidden, even though he made it for our ultimate glory before the world began. 7

God has now revealed to us his mysterious plan regarding Christ, a plan to fulfill his own good pleasure. And this is the plan: At the right time he will bring everything together under the authority of Christ – everything in heaven and on earth. 8

Rejoice because your names are registered in heaven, 9 written in the Book of Life before the world was made. 10

I will declare Your greatness

 I will extol you, my God and I will declare your greatness. 1

Your steadfast love, O LORD, extends to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds. Your righteousness is like the mountains, your judgments are like the great deep. 2 

You have multiplied, O LORD my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts towards us; none can compare with you! I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more can be told. 3

My mouth will tell of your righteous acts, of your deeds of salvation all the day. My tongue will talk of your righteous help. 4 I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will praise you. 5 I will remind them of your righteousness, yours alone. O God, from my youth you have taught me, and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds. 6

I have not restrained my lips, as you know, O LORD. I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart; I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation. 7 So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come. 8

Idolatry

 God says

 

My people have forgotten me, they burn me offerings to a delusion; they have stumbled in their ways and have gone into bypaths not the highway. 1 They went far from me, and went after worthless things, and became worthless themselves. 2

My people have changed their glory for something that does not profit. My people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living water, and dug out for themselves, cracked cisterns that can hold no water. 3

They have taken their idols into their hearts, and placed their iniquity as a stumbling block before them; shall I let myself be consulted by them? 4

For they have turned their backs to me, and not their faces. But in the time of their trouble they say, “Come and save us!” But where are your gods that you made for yourself? Let them come, if they can save you, in your time of trouble. 5 

Besides me there is no saviour. 6 Repent and turn away from your idols. 7 

You shall have no other gods before me, for I the LORD your God am a jealous God. 8
