Does God always forgive me?

He has taken our sins away from us as far as the east is from the west.

Psalm 103.12

Maybe you stay mad for a long time when a friend does something to you that’s unkind or hurtful. You don’t want to be friends again until you make that person as upset as you are. So you treat your friend mean until he or she says, “I’m sorry” 1000 times.

The Bible has some great news, God isn’t like that! When you trust in Jesus to take away your sins, right away he makes you friends with him again. And when you ask for forgiveness, he gives it. He forgives, the first time and every time after that, whenever you need him to. (1 John 1.8-9) Not only that, but God forgets the wrong you do. It’s as if he sends your sin off to the other end of the universe, never to be seen again.

Our friendship with God is like a beautiful vase. Sin is like knocking that vase to the ground, or throwing it at a wall. As humans, the best we can do is glue the vase back together and hope the cracks don’t show. God does a far better thing. His forgiveness glues all the broken pieces of our friendship back together. We get a fresh start with him. A good as new friendship. It’s as if we never sinned. All the cracks are gone.
